Circles into Space
This study I did last week has a constructivist feel to it and prompted others
to make a connection with Calder and his mobiles. So now I am looking at the
work of Calder and considering how to take my circle shapes into space.
Alexander Calder explored movement, motion and colour by creating mobile sculptures that symbolised the universal movement of the solar system. His works are kinetic and dynamic. He experimented with different but very ordinary materials.
Two of Calder's maquettes really appealed to me:
Sail and Peaks 1956
The Nose 1968
I am trying to apply Calder's techniques to my circle shapes develop my
circle ideas......

Circles
although I am working in monochrome at the moment I saw the bright circles in this out of
focus photo I took this afternoon .......
Progression
flat circle paintings up against the window in bright sunlight!
circles with paint texture in white
flat circles with a constructivist feel.....speaking with other painters we got thinking
of Calder and I may cut out shapes like this as mobiles ..... to suspend the shapes
in space and see where it leads ......
experiment with texture
new work with solid black circle, paint texture and circle outlines
close up of paint texture

I am enjoying painting abstract forms in monochrome. It is interesting working out how to place the circle
on the picture plane to convey the sense of 'infinity' .....to try to convey 'infinity' with finite means ......I think
it works best when the circle/circles don't quite fit into the finite space ..... that is the edge of the picture
plane cuts off part of it ...... saying in effect this is too big to comprehend......
I am struck by the effect of the monochrome and how it lends itself to the sense of vastness in a cosmic
way and I like the austere effects I can create.
This week I am reading Malevich and whilst he painted squares mainly his observations on the basic forms:
squares, circles and crosses are proving to be useful. I like his 'White on White' works and the more recent work of Ellsworth Kelly.

Infinity
continuing with my ongoing circle theme I am now working in monochrome with acrylic
